Twenty years after the start of the groundbreaking Ford Focus MK1, the fourth generation car.
And the good news is that Fords Big-Selling-Family-Schrährheck has regained its Mojo. After I have had a few focus over the years, I should know.
Ford clearly heard feedback because the new model was the few mistakes that existed in the outgoing model and the focus is again where it belongs – at the top of the class.
Everything that results in more style, space, comfort, technology, safety functions and standard equipment. In fact, Ford says that it is the “most experienced and technically advanced focus of ever”.
It has to catch up a bit because the Volkswagen Golf stolen a march in 2018 and established itself after the Ford Fiesta as the bestselling car No. 2 in Great Britain.
The focus is on fifth place there, but now that the new model is enforced into the forecourt, VW can expect a tough competition in the family flash industry.
With the prices for the entry -level focus style from £ 18,300 (almost 2,000 GBP under the model he replaces), Ford clearly means business.
The range specifications are available as a five-door assembly line or estate and are one of the most popular two options (Zetec and ST-Line), followed by ST-Line X, Titanium, Titan X and Plush Vignale.
The focus style is standard with 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning systems, digital radio with Bluetooth, autonomous emergency braking and a lane assistant.
Zetec models add Fords Sync3 -Dab -Radio with a 6.5 -inch touchscreen (Apple CarPlay/Android Auto Compatibility), cruise cruise with speed limiter, anterior fog lighter and QuickClear -heated windshield.
Front and rear parking sensors, heated front seats, double-zone climatic control control, keyless movement and start, a larger 8.0-inch color touchscreen and satellite nav-navigation with titanium models, while Titanium X receives partial leather equipment, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, privacy Glass and 17-inch alloys.
The extras for the sporty ST-line include additional physical cladding, a rear spoiler and twin tailropes. The ST-Line X adds 18-inch alloys and red brake children’s rods. At the top of the range is the vignal model with a unique front grille, complete LED lighting, leather clothing, a head-up display, a rear view camera and a heated steering wheel with a 675 watt B & O-audio system with 10 spokesman.
You can between 1.0-liter (84 BHP, 99 BHP or 123 BHP) or 1.5-liter (148 BHP or 180 BHP) Turbo-Ecoboost-Ecoboost petrol engines or two four-cylinder Ecoblue diesel units-A 1.5 (94BHP and 118BHP) or 2.0 or A. 2.0 or a 2.0 or a 2.0 or A 2.0 A. -Litre (148 hp). The gearboxes include a 6-speed manual and an 8-speed automatic.
The fuel consumption ranges from a petrol high of 60.1 MPG in the 99 hp in Ecoboost 1.0-liter to an excellent 80.7 MPG in the 1.5-liter Ecoblue diesel (94 hp and 118 hp). The CO2 emissions are only 107 g/km or 91 g/km.
I have tested two 1.5-liter Ecoblue diesel engines with 118 BHP-one in ST-Line-trim with a 6-speed manual, the other in ST-Line X, which is specific with an 8-speed automatic .
Ecoblue is smooth, clever, powerful and economical and is a peach of an engine. Depending on the wheel size, the time from 0 to 62 miles per hour lies around the 10-second mark, but seems to be too difficult, while the economic figures that nudge 80 MPG are excellent.
The fast switching box is a joy, while the automatic is controlled by a Dinky rotating switch equipment voter in the center console, which is easy to use and generally changes smoothly. There is also a steering wheel paddle when you prefer to change the equipment manually.
The Ecoboost petrol engines are used in the entire Ford area and are equally impressive and after the fiestas that I have driven recently, the 1.0-liter 123-horsepower value may be the one who is for the best Offer performance/economic mix.
The MK1 focus set a new benchmark for handling in the middle hatch class, but probably newer models were not quite as sharp.
Fortunately, the brand new focus is on a return to the shape and especially on challenging roads on which it is planted with a lot of grip, excellent traction from corners and negligible body roll, while the steering offers more feeling.
Admittedly, the ST-Line and ST-Line X equipment offer a lower, stiffer furnishings than the other models in the area, but they can really have fun in this focus, and I don’t think specifications.
It is also a comfortable journey that is supported by the additional space inside, since the new focus represents a great improvement in the outgoing model in terms of packaging.
They can sit beautiful and low in the front, while the passengers now have a lot of leg and headroom, but only before the Panoramic Ebenof option, which can eat in the latter.
There is an appropriate 375 liter luggage compartment or 1,354 liters, with the 60/40 divided rear seats folded, as well as many smaller storage rooms.
The dashboard layout is stylish and clear, and it is easy to see that Ford has not completely handed over with buttons. A recommendation would be the upgrade to the 8.0-inch center touchscreen, which is both clearly and easy to use.
The processing quality is high and there is a lot of plastic in the cabin where it is important.
It is also full of the latest tech at the driver aid, which undoubtedly contributed to a maximum of five stars in the security assessment of Euro NCAP.
The brand new Ford focus is therefore difficult to owe, but with the Gulf of the eight generation due in 2019 and the recent start of the much improved Kia Ceed, he must be at the top of his game.
Verdict: Stylish, comfortable, safe and practical, with excellent handling and a large selection of efficient engines and the brand new Ford Focus are back in the class.
