This year Kia celebrates 25 years in Great Britain – a time when the South Korean automobile manufacturer has increased meteorically.
KIAS has always gained a reputation for its stylish, well-made cars that offer a good price-performance ratio and of course supported by this unbeatable seven-year guarantee.
Just a few months after the start of the latest Sportage SUV, which already sells like Hot Cakes, the brand new Niro-Nante only comes to Kia’s first hybrid crossover, but also a rather unique position.
The Niro is another example of Kia’s surprising capability. It is a pioneering car that carves out a new niche.
In Out Fell Swoop Kia now has a challenger in the compact crossover segment that competes with people like Nissan Qashqai and Renault Kadjar as well as established hybrids such as The Toyota Prius.
It is also worth remembering that in contrast to some competitors, the Niro has been built up on a special platform that enables future hybrid and all electrical versions of future plug-in hybrid and all-electric versions.
The NIRO range begins at 21,295 GBP and offers families and fleet buyers access to a well-equipped, stylish state-of-the-art hybrid at an affordable price.
On paper, the most economical Niro is able to claim 74.4 MPG and CO2 emissions of only 88 g/km. I couldn’t keep up, but on various test routes I found that 50-60MPG was quite possible.
The design teams in South Korea and California managed to create a slippery car (with a low air resistance coefficient of 0.29 cd), which, like some hybrids, does not look strange and can still use five people with plenty of luggage compartment.
I tested the flagship “First Edition” model and the cheaper “2” version with a price of £ 26,995 and 22,795 GBP.
Both look good, but the first edition contains the entire kit. It is crucial if the economy has a priority, it has larger bikes (18 ″ instead of 16 inches), which surprisingly leads to a somewhat lower potential economy of 64.2 MPG.
The Niro is also designed clean on the inside and has a high quality feeling. The center console is dominated by an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system (standard in the first edition), which leads to only a few buttons, while the dashboard is clear and simple. It also contains essential hybrid charging information.
The Niro is not quite as high as some of its competitors, but there is still a commanding driving position in an otherwise comfortable and spacious cabin at the front and back.
A whole series of driver aids and security kits are available, including autonomous emergency braking, detection of blind, rear traffic warning and adaptive speed control, which helps the Niro with a maximum euro NCAP crash safety evaluation of five-star NCAP relegation companies.
You do not start the Niro so much and press the start button (in high specification models) because it is simply switched on in electrical mode. Then simply select D on the six-speed automatic transmission with two couplings and are off.
Fortunately, Kia did not choose an annoying CVT system (continuously variable gear), like many manufacturers of hybrids, and there is also an option for selected equipment manually in “Manual Sports” mode.
If you do not put your foot down, it slides tacitly even at low speeds. Go a little faster and the 1.6-liter petrol engine occurs quite seamlessly. In theory, the combination of 102 HP petrol engine and 42 -hp electric engine increases the output to 139 hp.
For general driving, gears and engine are in order, although more spirited drivers can long for more electricity, but the fact is that they don’t buy a five -door hybrid to drive it like a sports car. So most will be more than happy with performance. For the recording, it is capable of 101 miles per hour at a top speed and can reach 60 miles per hour in 11.1 seconds.
What also distinguishes the Niro is that the engineers did a great job to create a refined driving experience – not only in terms of cabin noises, but also ride, which is surprisingly smooth.
I would not say that the niro was exciting, but it is certainly very capable and comparable to the opposition. The road is decent and there is a small body role when it is driven, but ultimately the Niro revolves around economy, and if it is driven properly, it will deliver.
And if you are new to hybrids, it is worth receiving a few driving tips so that you can optimally use your niro. For example, the gently and early braking of regenerative braking training helps more energy, which means that the car can increase the petrol engine more closely and work longer in electrical mode.
Verdict: Kia has another winner in her hands. The Niro is stylish, safe, practical, economical and clever and makes sense, especially in the middle of the 2-specific ‘2’trim.
