SUVs seems to get all the love these days, but there is still a demand for traditional real estate cars – and they don’t look much better than the new Kia Optima Sportswagon.
The standard optima salon has been with us for several years and is one of the hidden jewels of the car market.
However, it is the misfortune that it competes in one of the most competitive sectors, so it has to do against the mighty mondeo and the insignia. It’s not perfect, but it’s a good value and is probably the most beautiful car in its class.
The sports wagon is not just the feast for the eyes – it should be seriously taken into account by fleet buyers, families and taxi drivers.
With 552 liters of luggage capacity and a cave -like 1,686 liters with the 40:20:40 split rear seats, it is a real load. It cannot quite fit the class with the class leading Skoda superb, but then its Czech rival is not so pretty. However, the sports wagon is very practical with a wide tailgate and a loading load lip.
Even if two big people at the front, the back seat is the back seat and there is a lot of headroom despite the sporting roof line.
The car is available in a refreshingly simple three equipment variants. The Basic ‘2’, Mid-Range ‘3’ and flagship GT-Line S. begin at 22,295 GBP for the 2 and climb to 30,595 GBP for the GT-Line S, which is packed with extras and driver aids.
All three are driven by the 1.7-liter CRDI turbodiesel engine from Kia, which develops 139 hp. The top speed is 124 km / h, while the acceleration of 0-60 miles per hour is 9.8 seconds (manual) and 10.7 seconds (automatically).
With KIAS idle stop & Go engine stop/starting system, CO2 emissions for manual cars are 113 g/km, while the potential fuel consumption is 64.2 MPG.
The seven-speed automatic transmission with two couplings, which is unfortunately not available in the basic car of 2 equipment variants, can be able to be 61.4 MPG and releases 120 g/km CO2.
The switching box is okay, but the car is sweeter. A tip – if you choose the manual option and have long arms, make sure that you can change the equipment freely without knocking your elbow on the Cubby box between the seats.
The 1.7-liter engine is all about economy. It is a little hard under hard acceleration, and you have to take it over to overtake, but it crosses well what is done at work because the sports wagon will probably spend a large part of its time on highways.
However, another larger engine selection would help to fully load the current sports wagon. A sporting high-performance GT version will be promised for more spirited drivers for the beginning of 2017.
The good news is that it is going well. The driving quality is smooth, the body roll is well controlled, the handle is good and the steering is light and precise. The driving position is comfortable and the full leather seats on the GT lines are recommended.
Inside, the cabin has a feeling of quality with a number of decent, durable materials, but basically you get what you pay for. Regardless of whether it is a black cloth, a black cloth with synthetic leather or black leather seats or a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen, it is worth scanning the technical leaves.
As expected, the available kit (depending on which equipment is selected) is extensive and includes autonomous emergency braking, detection of blind stains with rear traffic warning, connectivity of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well as load for wireless smartphones.
If you can stretch to £ 30,595, the GT-Line S are delivered with all toys and look most sharpest
Verdict: The Kia Optima Sportswagon is a great all-round package-a inexpensive, economic, well-equipped, spacious property with a lot of curb drive. And of course it comes with KIAS unbeatable seven years of guarantee.
