Some cars that apparently start without large fanfare prove to be surprisingly good. The brand new Kia Rio is such a vehicle.
In its fourth generation, the Rio has the non-envied task of fighting in a sector that is dominated by the British best-selling car in the past eight years-of Ford Fiesta.
In addition, Vauxhalls popular Corsa, the new Citroen C3 and others like the Volkswagen Polo, the seat of Ibiza, Hyundai i20, Skoda Fabia and Audi A1, and it is clear that these superminis need a USP.

However, the good news is that it is also a good car and it is competitive and has a few surprises your sleeve.
First let us put the Rio in the context. In Great Britain it is overshadowed by the successful Sportage Crossover and Cee’d Range, but the Rio is the best -selling car from Kia worldwide with sales of around 475,000 per year, which is almost a sixth of the company.
At first glance, the Rio, which is only available as a five -door man, sees not so different from the outgoing car. Look harder and you will see that the cute curves of the previous generation have been replaced by sharper lines and smoother surfaces. At speeds between 5 and 50 km / h, there will be a standstill and avoid many potential collisions. It is also able to recognize pedestrians who hike in his way and use the brakes in the same way.
The fact that this safety technology is available in the entire range is a great news. One day all cars have AEB by default.
At the moment, Kia offers it as an option for the entry -level car, but standard in the rest of the area, which is better than nothing but still missed an opportunity.
A lane warding system is also available. It is based on a camera with the inscription with the lane marking and feels when the car dismisses the course without the indicators being activated and warns the driver to take correction measures.
Price of only £ 11,995, there are 10 versions of the Rio in three trim class Maded 1, 2 and 3 as well as a limited first edition model with a price of £ 17.445.
The 1-specification of the entry level includes air conditioning, remote central locking, Bluetooth telephone connectivity and steering wheel control for the stereo system.
The upgrade to 2 specification adds a 5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with DAB-Radio, alloy wheels, leather cladding for the steering wheel and gear lever, electrical poultry level, cruise control, return camera and autonomous emergency brakes.

Kia quotes 68.2 MPG for the 99 hp unit with 102 g/km CO2, while the 118 HP engine for 60.1 MPG is able to issue 107 g/km CO2.
Two more petrol engines are offered 1,25 (83 hp) and 1.4-liter (99 BHP) naturally sucked-out MPI units-the former is good for 58.8 MPG and 109 g/km CO2, during the 1, 4-liter 56.5 MPG and 114g/km with one delivers with one with a 1.4-liter switching gear.

We drove both versions of the 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol turbo engine and the more powerful 1.4-liter diesel with 89 hp.
Both three-pots are surprisingly fast and beat well above their weight. Yes, they are aware of the Thrum in strong acceleration, but they will soon sit down well. The diesel obviously offers more grunts, but is again refined as every diesel in a small car and possibly very economically refined.
Rio’s journey is average, but certainly not terrible, while it is pretty good. Yes, there is a body that supports itself in corners when they are on a mission, but in the end this is a car that is pretty gently driven from A to B, and it is not a hot hat. So is it important? The view is good, while the steering is easy, parking and tight manoever makes a doddle.
In the cabin, there is pleasant enough with plenty of space, comfortable sitting and enough space in the back for adults in full size, which is quite impressive for a supermini. Yes, it does not seep into soft touch plastics, but it is still well put together. The trunk has risen by almost 13% compared to the outgoing model to generous 325 liters, although there is a cross -load lip and the rear sets are folded completely flat.
The instrumentation is clear in front of the driver, while the 7-inch “floating” touchscreen is excellent in the center console. Unfortunately, it is only available in ‘3’ Spec-‘1 ‘and’ 2 ‘with 3.5 or 5-inch screens.
Verdict: The new Kia Rio is not the best car in its class, but in some important areas, including security, comfort, equipment, selection of engine and peace, it is a great all-round package.
