We test the brand new, full hybrid mg ZS Compact Family SUV …

It was a busy year for MG Motor UK. The Chinese brand not only launched the celebrated MG3 Hybrid+ Supermini, but the medium -sized SUV of the next generation and the groundbreaking Cyberstar Electric sports car.

As if that weren’t enough, the next generation MG ZS, which is now bigger, better and still a bargain.

The new ZS has a lot to fulfill. The outgoing model was one of the best -selling cars of the UK. It has achieved more than 100,000 sales since the start in 2017.

The MG ZS Hybrid+ from £ 21,995 to 24,995 GBP conveniently undermines its many competitors, including Ford Puma, Hyundai Kona, Volkswagen T-Cross Skoda Kamiq, Renault Captur, Nissan Juke and Toyota Yaris Cross.

For this generation, the ZS is currently only offered as a full hybrid (there is no EV version) and uses the same system as the MG3 Hybrid+.

In other words, it is not necessary to connect it, and the system combines a 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor that provides a total output of 193 hp.

The electric motor contributes 134 hp and 250 Nm torque, so that the ZS is accelerated from 0 to 62 miles per hour in powerful 8.7 seconds. With a three-speed gear, the drive takes place over the front wheels (there is no all-wheel drive option).

The small 1.83 kWh battery enables short bursts of pure electrical driving, which helps the ZS Hybrid+ to deliver the demanding fuel consumption of up to 55.4 MPG and CO2 emissions of only 115 g/km.

There are two equipment variant available – SE and trophy. SE entry level offers delicacies, including a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment (with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Integrated Sat-NAV), a digital instrument cluster of the 7.0-inch driver, a reversal camera, the rear parking sensors and one Keylos Entry and Plus Keylos Entry The MG Pilot Suite of Safety and Driver Assistance Systems.

The toping trophy gives black upholstery of leather effects, heated front seats and steering wheel, a 360-degree camera, a rear data protection glass, an adjustable driver’s seat and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The new ZS Hybrid+ has styling that brings it into harmony with the HS and MG3 Hybrid+. Better proportioned than the outgoing model is longer, larger and wider, while its smoother lines are friendly for the eye, even if the nose treatment exceeds more than a temporary similarity to the Suzuki.

In view of the fact that the ZS is at the budget end of the market, the interior looks surprisingly good and feels surprisingly good. There are some soft touch surfaces and the faux leather seats in the trophy version are the highest quality.

There is plenty of space in the cabin with many storage areas. The legroom The back seat is particularly generous, and even larger passengers have no symptoms.

For the recording, the trunk has a decent capacity of 443 liters and expanded 1,457 liters, with the rear seats folded.

The driving position is pretty high ahead. It is not a deal breaker and I got used to it soon, but I would prefer a little more downward trip. However, there is no excuse for the lack of steering wheel range in 2024.

The infotainment system is a great improvement in previous iteration, but still not the best. On the positive side there are physical connection buttons under the main screen. However, it is not always the fastest or most intuitive system, while the steering wheel controls are fiddly.

The MG ZS Hybrid+ is pleasant to drive on the street, but let’s be honest, there will be no smile on the face of spirited drivers.

It is mostly smooth and refined, but when you put your foot down or uphill, the petrol engine and the speed rise up. The transmission does not help because it is occasionally unpredictable and lasts longer than necessary on the gears.

The new ZS is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace or simply ride.

The steering is light and precise and it is a doddle for driving, but the journey is on the firm side and can be fidgety via poorer surfaces at lower speeds. There are also a lot of wind and street noises that make it into the cabin.

If you push it in more demanding corners and body lean, you are kept well, but even with activated Sport Drive mode (there is also standard and ECO), it will never be a dynamic car to drive.

It is worth noting that there are also three energy regeneration modes that can be set on the steering wheel with the two programmable keys. Always a pleasure to involve additional rain on descents to charge the battery.

Because of our test drive on a variety of streets, we would say that the economy of 50 MPG+ is realistic, which is impressive.

MG ZS Hybrid+ Rating

If you are looking for security for all MGS, the ZS Hybrid+ has a generous guarantee of seven years/80,000 miles.

Verdict: Simply put, the brand new MG ZS Hybrid+ is an economic SUV in a family size for about the same price as a supermini. It may not be first class for the dynamics on the street, but it is a doddle for driving, spacious, well equipped and blessed with a seven -year guarantee.
