The Evergreen Peugeot 2008 is a familiar sight on our streets, but can he still mix it with the new children on the block in the hotly competitive small crossover segment?
What is that?
The 2008 originally introduced in 2013 was updated in 2016 and marketed as a SUV.
Although it has an increased ride, wear and roofing rails, it does not have a performance with all -wheel drive.
Nevertheless, it is blessed with Grip Control, a clever system that strengthens traction with goodyear vector tires of the entire season at low grip conditions in tandem.
The Grip Control optimizes the traction on the front wheels and you can select your drive mode (standard, snow, mud, sand and ESP) via a rotating dial in addition to the equipment selection.
The competitors of the Peugeot SUV in 2008 include Nissan Juke and Renault Captur as well as Kia Stonic, Hyundai Kona and Citroen C3 Aircross, recently launched.
It was awarded the best small SUV of the Auto Express driver 2017 and there are four equipment variant -Active, Allure, Allure Premium and GT line. There is also a good selection of economic petrol and diesel engines as well as manual and automatic transmission.
First impressions
The 2008 still looks good, and the updates for Post 2016 contain a new vertical front grill, bumper and lights as well as the addition of handle control and additional outer colors.
The car is well built and generally stylish and fits Peugeot’s more famous picture.
It is just as well packaged as always, with space for adults at the front and back and the 1/3 – 2/3 rear seats, which flipped slightly down, a spacious trunk capacity between 410 and 1,400 liters. There are also many small storage rooms.
The high driving position and the cockpit will be known to other Peugeot -SUV owners, but could surprise others. There is a small steering wheel while the Binnacle instrument is reset directly below the windshield.
A 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard in the entire area (including DAB) and is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Mirror Link. There are better screens, but it does the job.
If you want a grip control and automatic air conditioning for the dual zones, you have to choose consumption or over it, or for the premium and higher for a satellite nav and the excellent panoramic roof.
Engine options
The 2008 has two efficient petrol and diesel engines, both of which are available in three performance outputs.
The 1.2-liter pureetech gasoline with three cylinders (with Maded 82, 110 and 130) is fastest if you choose the 130 and reach 62 km / h from the stand in 9.3 seconds while The most economical choice 82 is (capable of 64.2 MPG).
The 82 is ideal for driving in the city, while the 110 is the best all -rounder. However, the 130 is the only petrol engine that is available as a six-speed manual or automatically (82 and 110 have five-speed manual transmission).
The emission levels are 102-114 g/km for all three low between.
The Bluehdi Diesel (75, 100 and 120) is one of the most economical engines on the market. It is also ready and relatively refined, with low CO2 emissions of 96 g/km for the 120 to 97 g/km for the two less powerful units.
All three diesel engines can be 76.3 MPG, which is excellent and whatever your engine selection depends on whether you mainly drive in the city or spend most of the time on motorways.
How does it drive?
I tested the Top-of-the-Range-GT line version of the Peugeot 2008, which costs from £ 20,595 and is a revelation.
At first the small steering wheel and the sporty driving position for a fairly high crossover seem to be a bit strange, but they soon get used to it.
The 129 -PS -PURETECH turbo petrol engine is a lively performer and in the best possible way.
With sharp steering and minimal body roll it is nimble and progress can be surprisingly quick when you are in the mood. The journey is on the firm side, but it is never uncomfortable and there is a lot of grip. All in all, a thoroughly entertaining journey.
There are more sophisticated cabins in its class, but it is never pushy and it will settle well when crossing.
Fortunately, my grip control had adjusted in 2008 and I was able to put it in snow in snow.
I was skeptical at first, but after I had selected the snow mode, it really delivered it additional traction and I was one of the few cars with front -wheel drive that ventured out of our village. It’s not a replacement for 4 × 4, but it’s the next best.
Verdict
The Peugeot 2008 is well matured and is still a stylishly striking, well -packed, committed alternative in a very competitive sector.
