Volvo XC40

The smallest SUV from Volvo had the greatest influence when it was unveiled at the end of 2017. It was critically recognized several awards, including the prestigious European car of the year.

We were very impressed when we tested the XC40 in early 2018, but we could only try the versions of 188 PSHP D4 (diesel) and 244 hp (petrol T5).

In 2018, the registrations in Great Britain fell by 30%, so it is more important than ever to visit this Swedish premium jewel again with an additional smaller petrol engine.

First let’s get a feeling for where the Volvo XC40 is on the SUV market. With regard to price and quality, we would say that natural competitors include the BMW X1, Audi Q3, Jaguar E-Pace and Mercedes-Benz GLA, although the cheaper Mazda CX-5 is also a great car.

At a price of £ 27,610 there are three equipment variant impulse, R-design (the most popular) and inscription jewels available in a higher specification version.

I tested the entry level XC40 T3 in Momentum Pro-Trim, which was packed with options and tipped the scale to almost 35,000 GBP.

The 1.5-liter engine with three cylinders develops 154 hp and is paired with a six-speed manual transmission, while the drive takes place over the front wheels. If you want to stick to gasoline, but prefer all-wheel drive, you have to choose the 2.0-liter T4 (four-cylinder 2.0-liter T4 (the best-selling XC40) or the more powerful T5.

Some say the XC40 is the result of a Russian doll SUV strategy from Volvo and that it is only a mini version of the XC60 and XC90. The reality is that it is a unique style that is located with a concave grille, a Clamshell engine hood and a clunky overall look.

The interior definitely resembles its larger siblings with its attractive, high-quality layout and a large portrait infotainment touchscreen in the center console and a chic 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster in front of the driver.

There is also plenty of space at the front and back (larger passengers included), while the total finish is flawless. Our only minor dispute would be that even with the driver’s seat on the lowest environment on the highest side, is a little high for larger people … Although others may describe it as an commanding driving position.

The trunk is excellent and extends from 460 liters to 1,336 liters when you fold down the rear seats. There is a clever touch in the trunk because the floor folds to share the room – ideal, for example to stop shopping bags.

The safety in the city, the AEB system (automatic Emergency Brems) from Volvo, which can be discovered with pedestrians, cyclists and large animals, is among the large number of security systems on board Oncoming vehicle and helps you to safely steer you back into your lane.

On paper it is 9.4 seconds with a time of 0-62 miles per hour, a top speed of 124 km/h, fuel consumption of 44.1-45.6 MPG and 144-148 g/km CO2 emissions.

The car I tested was a looker that was completed in Amazona blue with a contrasting white roof and a striking five-spoke white/black 19-inch alloy wheels.

It went well too. It seemed eager for a relatively small engine than the official figures suspected, while the refinement of the cabin was very impressive must really put your foot on the floor before the three-cylinder thrum makes itself known.

The georchaon is good, although not quite as sporty as the Mazda CX-5, so it is generally an impressive package.

However, the fuel consumption of the real world was somewhat disappointing, just like most three pots, because they only have to be processed a little harder. Realistically speaking, you will probably not be 30-37MPG better, unless you are on a long journey at a steady, modest speed.

The good news is that the Volvo XC40 is one of the best SUVs on the market and manages to feel composed and to stay quite flat in faster corners while the journey on the firm side is still comfortable.

The traction is good, but the front wheels fight for the handle under wet conditions. Most XC40S probably end up in and in the city, so this will not be a problem. If you live in the country in which you would expect your XC40 to handle the extremes with more difficult conditions, the all -wheel drive might be the right way.

In general, the XC40 is an appealing drive with the different modes (including eco, comfort and dynamics), which offers this additional variety, while the steering is sharp and beautifully weighted.

Verdict: The entry -level operator Volvo XC40 T3 is a surprise package that offers more speed and refinement than you would expect. The fact that it is also noble, safe, practical and well traded is only the icing on the cake.
