Fiat gave the 500 times a significant upgrade, so we did it for a shoot to find out whether the Big Brother of the 500 has the X factor …
The Fiat 500x is now a familiar sight on our streets, but it is fair to say that it has not reached the iconic status of his smaller sibling – The Dinky 500.
When the 500-fold 2014 was joined by the growing Fiat 500 family, she certainly looked adult and ticked a few large boxes of Sodass Fiat using the booming compact crossover market and 500 owners who grown out their car.
Since then, however, the list of rivals has multiplied. With regard to the size, it is somewhere between the Nissan Juke/Citroen C3 aircraft and the slightly larger Skoda Karoq/Seat Ateca, so that it has no end to the competitors.
In contrast to the 500L, which divides the opinion aesthetically, the 500 -fold is much better proportioned and actually looks like a larger 500.
And for this upgrade, Fiat has carefully decided to leave the exterior design of the 500 -times rather intact.
There are also two versions (“Urban” and “Cross” look), although the equipment variants were simplified on only three – urban, city cross and cross plus – and there is now no 4 × 4 option or diesel.
New LED -LIGHT -LIGHT -LIGHT -LIGHTER and LED rear light clusters are standard in the entire area, which provides the rest of the 500 family closer to the 500 times and provides a characteristic signature of the front light.
The other subtle changes include an optimized front and rear-bush rod design for the urban version, while the cross receives new protective skid plates.
There are also new cycling options and three cool new colors – Techno Green, Italian Blue and ivory.
Inside, the dashboard was also brought into harmony with the rest of the 500 family. For example, the Binnacle instrument reserves its three circular elements in front of the driver, which connect retro style and modern technology. Two analog dials (speedometer and speedometer) flank a 3.5-inch TFT display, which provides important information to the driver.
Elsewhere, the areas of the dashboard now have the body color of the car (just like the 500), and there are more 500 logos that are sprinkled in and outside the cabin.
The most significant change is below the bonnet, where the 500 -fold contains the first Fiat model with the new “Firefly” series series of efficient turbo engines.
The installation of £ 16,995 contains a 1.0-liter unit with three cylinders, which delivers 120 hp and is combined with a six-speed manual transmission.
There is also a 1.3-liter engine with a four-cylinder with 150 hp combined with a six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission (DCT).
The 1.0-liter engine can reach 62 miles per hour in 10.9 seconds and a top speed of 117 km / h. The fuel consumption is up to 48.7 MPG, while CO2 emissions are only 133 g/km.
The larger petrol turbo is somewhat faster with a 0-62 miles per hour of 9.1 seconds and a top speed of 124, while fuel consumption is up to 45.6 MPG with CO2 emissions of 140 g/km.
There is also a 1.6-liter petrol engine with 110 hp levels, but it is the 1.0-liter unit that is probably the most popular option.
The new 500x now offers safety support systems. Traffic sign recognition, intelligent speed assistant and Lane Assist are standard, while blind spot alert, adaptive speed control and city brake control (Fiat version of autonomous emergency braking or AEB) are also given.
Last, but last but not least, all versions of the 500-fold are equipped with the latest 7.0-infotainment touchscreen system from Uconnect with Apple CarPlay integration and Android auto-compatibility as the standard.
This upgrade is more than a redesign and brings the new 500 -time bang up to date, but how is it on the street?
The new 1.0-liter petrol turbo “Firefly” turbo may be small, but it is powerful and if you do not regularly have a complete addition to passengers and luggage, it should have more than enough grunts for daily driving.
It is also refined for a three -cylinder and only if you can hear this familiar thrum. You have to work the six-speed manual transmission if you want to make quick progress, but in general it is an impressive little engine.
The steering is light and makes it ideal for urban driving, while the journey on the firm side is, which means that it is in order on smooth surfaces, but feels less sophisticated on rough roads.
It would be wrong to say that 500 times the handling of the class time, but it is completely acceptable. In general, it feels solid and stable on cruises, while the body is slimmer in the curve with speed.
The 500x is similar elsewhere. With a high driving position there is plenty of space at the front and many storage rooms. It is possible to push three adults into the back, although larger passengers (over 6 feet) may be able to fight for the back of the head. The trunk is 350 liters and rises to 1,000 liters if the rear (60/40 split) seats are turned down.
The new infotainment system is definitely an improvement, although the touchscreen is still on the small side and there are units with clearer graphics. The retro-feeling fitting board with body color works very well and overall the car is well put together.
Verdict: The updated Fiat 500x is an unmistakable, well-equipped choice in the incredibly competitive compact crossover sector. The willing new 1.0-liter petrol turbo and security systems are welcome additions, while its improved connectivity will not do any damage. Ultimately, financial offers can be for many of the rotors, since the 500x on PCP is only available £ 159 per month.
