If you are still trying to bring your head over the concept of an Alfa Romeo -SUV, you simply rest. We drove the Stelvio and it is not only very good, it is also surprisingly faithful to the brand’s sporty legacy.
What is that?
Alfa Romeo is on a role. The celebrated Giulia is one of the best sports limousia on the market, and now we have the first sports program of the Italian Marque.
Price of £ 33,990, it is against hard opposition, including the Jaguar F-Pace, Audi Q5, Porsche Macan and BMW X3.
The fantastic £ 69,500 Stelvio Quadrifoglio, the fastest SUV in its class, extends over the reach – but that is a different story overall …
With a maximum of five stars in Euro -ncap -Crash tests, it is also very safe. The standard security systems include the integrated brake system from Alfa Romeo (which significantly reduces the brake spacing on any street area), an autonomous emergency brake with pedestrian detection, monitoring of the blind spot, forward collision warning and warning for wasting.
In January 2018, the title “Premium SUV” was won in the CCT100 Awards 2018 company car.
First impressions
The Stelvio shares the opinion. Some say it looks like a giulia on stilts, others a mini -maserati -levant one. The reality is that it is a good -looking animal in the metal.
It is greater than you might think of pictures, it is unmistakably an Alfa Romeo with its Scudetto front grill from the front. His profile lines are well shaped and are well done with a rear and a short overhang.
Inside, it is not unlike like Giulia, which is not a bad thing, except for the infotainment screen that is not a touchscreen and is only accessible to the gear selector via a Rotary controller. This means that the selection of a postcode on the navigation around a Daisywheel and clicking on every letter and the number must be clicked individually. It is also not the brightest, while the graphics do not seem to be very defined.
The interior of the stelvio is spacious and well designed with a high -quality feeling.
With a commanding, yet sporty driving position, the two main instruments with hoods are located directly in front of the driver, who wears Alfa Romeos of the past.
The luggage capacity is generous 525 liters or 1,600 liters with the rear seats.
Engine options
There is a selection of two petrol and diesel engines available, both available with two performance outputs.
The diesel engines are a 2.2-liter Q4 AWD and a 2.2-liter RWD & Q4 AWD and the petrol units are 2.0-liter (276 hp) Q4 AWD and 2.0-liter (197 BHP) Q4 AWD.
For some there is no manual stelvio and a ZF automatic automatic transmission is standard, while all-wheel drive (known as Q4) is available with all motor options.
The diesel engines are both with 59 MPG and 0-62 miles per hour between 6.6 and 7.6 seconds in the amount of 130 km/h with fuel emissions of 124-127 g/km CO2.
The 276-PS-2,0-liter gasoline-Q4 AWD engine offers the best acceleration of the classes, which goes from 0 to 62 miles per hour in just 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 143 km/h he returns 40.4 MPG with CO2 emissions of 161 g/km.
Selection of the selection
There are four specifics – Stelvio, great, Speciale and Milano Edizione.
Entry-level stelvio offers as a standard entry-level alloy wheels, LED rear lights, double lateral chrome exhaust tube, dual zone climatic control, a 3.5-inch tft-color-cluster-instrument panel, 8.8-inch infotainment- Screen with full connectivity and an audio system with eight speakers.
‘Super’ adds 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels, front parking sensors, a 3D navigation system, two-colored leather fittings board as well as leather and fabric padding. “Speciale” wheels switch again to 19-inch 10-spoke alloys with red brake packs. There are BI-Xenon 35W headlights, electricity mirrors with stream-folding and heated front leather seats with a six-way setting.
Finally, ‘Milano Edizione’ includes sporty leather seats, a 10-spokesman “sound theater”, 20-inch V spoke alloy wheels, keyless entry, privacy, electrically adjustable and heated front seats and a reversing camera.
How does it drive?
I tested the all-wheel drive ‘Milano Edizione’ Stelvio, which was driven by the 276 PS gasoline 2.0-liter petrol, which from £ 45,390- DES TRAIT-Range-Stelling-not up to the ballistic 503 brahp-square-squadrifoglio stretch can.
Named after the Italian Mountain Pass, which is famous for driving a thrill, you expect the Stelvio to handle much better than its average SUV – and it does not disappoint.
The first thing you notice is the steering that is so incredibly precise and direct that some get used to it.
As soon as you have the shoot, you can enjoy the handling that is surprisingly agile – in contrast to most SUVs.
Body Roll is minimal, inspiring self -confidence, which means that you can really stretch the legs of the Stelvios on more demanding streets. That means it will be happily driving on motorways and it is very stable.
The suspension is on the firm side, but the journey still remains smooth and comfortable.
The slick-eight-speed automatic transmission works happily together with the powerful petrol engine nozzle better if the paddle is used behind the wheel. And thanks to the AWD there is also a lot of traction on the barrel.
However, the paddles are huge and more on the steering column than on the wheel itself, so that they do not move when they turn, which is not ideal.
The Stelvio has Alfa Romeo’s DNA drive mode and enables them to switch between dynamic (sporty), natural (normal) and advanced efficiency (economically). Unnecessary to say that ‘D’ is the most fun, but the other two environments are in order for longer, less interesting trips where comfort and economy have the priorities.
But it is not perfect. The refinement of the engine is not a leader on the class, while the real fuel consumption (the petrol version I particularly drove) is average … although this is not supported by the fact that the Stelvio is such a worthwhile car to too drive!
Verdict
Alfa Romeo hit it with the Stelvio – a performance -SUV that stands out from the crowd. Entertaining to drive, practically and safe to drive, it will surely put a smile on your face.
