Rarely has one car changed from one generation to the next as much as the new Nissan Micra.
Once an ugly duckling who is loved so popular with driving schools and people of a certain age, the fifth generation is now the coolest new child on the block.
Fresh and modern, the striking new Supermini has Nissan’s typical V-Motion cooler grill, sharply shaped lines, rear door handles in the C-pillars, an extensive roof line with a spoiler, a “floating roof” and booming.
The well -proportioned new Micra is longer, wider and lower than before. It is so slippery that it offers a “best-in-class resistance coefficient of only 0.29”.
It is also trendy when it comes to personalization with a selection of 10 basic colors, including fabulous energy orange, which is available in combination with the various other options.
It is in the same story inside, in which it was stylishly designed with a wide use of high -quality plastics, decent fabrics and more adaptation options. At the front there is a definitive feeling of space and light, while the instrument cluster is clear and offers a digital information screen for mini colors between two large dials. Obviously, it is also completely connected to an integrated 7-inch infotainment touchscreen (Acenta grade upwards) that dominates the center console.
The seats are comfortable and there is a lot of adaptation as it is with the steering. It is a little narrower in the back, but there are just enough rooms for adults, although larger passengers will fight for head and leg space.
There are also many places where smaller items can also be kept in the cabin, while the trunk capacity is competitive 300 liters and grows to 1,004 liters, whereby the 60: 40 -split -rear seats are folded down.
The top-of-the-range-tekna also has an optional personal sound system “First Ost-Sing” bose with special speakers that are installed in the driver’s headrest in order to obtain an “immersive listening experience”. Nice gimmick, although the difference is not quite as dramatic as you might think.
The new Micra is only available as a five-door Micra and is available in five equipment variants-visia, Visia+, Acenta, N-Connecta and Tekna and costs £ 13,915 to £ 17.435.
First available with two 89 horsepower engines-a 0.9-liter three-cylinder turbo gasoline and 1.5-liter four-cylinder-turbo diesel is a 1.0-liter gasoline (non-turbo) with A 72 hp value of 72 hp later in 2017.
I have tested versions with the two engines that are now available in various equipment variants. For the recording, Nissan expects that the 0.9-liter petrol in the Acenta class will be the most popular model.
The first thing you notice when driving the new Micra is that it is impressively refined. Push it hard and the three-potter and petrol-thriner and it gets out a little out of breath, but keep it smooth and it is a good little unit. In any case, space for a hot Nismo version in the future.
As expected, the diesel has more torque and is much more relaxed at speed. So it is probably the better choice when you spend most of the time to drive on motorways. Both are quite economical on paper.
The 0.9-liter petrol can reach 62 miles per hour from the stand still in 12.1 seconds, a top speed of 109 km/h and up to 58.9 MPG and radiate a low 99 g/km CO2.
The 1.5-liter diesel is a little faster at 62 miles per hour (11.9 seconds), can reach 111 miles per hour, but can return with CO2 emissions of only 85 g/km to 88.3 mpg.
The engines are paired with a five-speed manual transmission, which is not the smoothest and it is sometimes an equipment body. This is the trend towards six speeds today.
The outstanding observation for the new Micra is that it is really impressively treated with hardly a body that is concerned with higher speeds and a good grip on the corners.
It uses the intelligent Trace control system from Nissan, which occupies in the curve, automatically adjust and adjust the brakes on the inside of the vehicle and the wheels from the outside. The journey is also nicely regulated.
And also the full grades for Nissan to equip the new Micra with a load of security and driver aid technologies by default. Each car has land departure warning, automatic emergency braking, traffic signs and high beam assist.
Other electronic safety systems are the electronic stability program, anti-lock brakes, hill starting assistants, a speed limiter, an automatic headlight sensor, automatic hazard lights and a tire pressure monitoring system.
The option list is also impressive for a Supermini, including the intelligent AVM (all-round view monitor), which offers you a virtual bird’s eye view of your car and its surroundings to make parking a doddle.
The Nissan Micra has to be good because it has to do against strong opposition, including the existing and upcoming new Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio, Suzuki Baleno, Citroen C3, Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Fabia.
Verdict: Nissan Micra is a much more stylish, well built, safe, full of treats and entertaining to drive. She is a serious contender.
