Replacing the popular Land Rover Discovery 4 was never an easy task.
The fact that the new disco is not only so good, but even better speaks volumes for rude health and the ambition of Land Rover.
Disco 5 is easier, more agile, even more capable and luxurious inside
Nevertheless, it can carry up to 3,500 kg, it can be surprisingly economical and it is now a real seven -seater. Yes, that’s right, seven adults can now take a trip in this excellent SUV.
In order to satisfy Discovery Devotees, the new car has different styling information from the outgoing model. The box -shaped looks of Disco 4 were replaced by curves and a front end, which is more reminiscent of his little brother, the Discovery Sport
It is still large and the roof line rises gently back to absorb seating in the stadium style, while the typical Clamshell motor hood and the opposite C-pillars are also available.
The plate rear of the Disco 5 may be quite split, but remember that this unpleasant number plate can also be seen on the old car. The discovery of the fifth generation also receives a top-ling single tailgate that loses the popular two-part loss, but there is still a rocky lead on which you can switch to picnic and its rubber boots.
The new discovery is 4970 mm long, 2220 mm wide (including the mirror) and 1846 mm in size, which means that it is a little longer, narrower and lower than the vehicle that replaces it.
It is crucial that the wheelbase is a fraction longer that strengthens the passenger space, while the liberal use of aluminum means that the entire cars weigh up to 480 kg less as Disco 4, depending on which engine you decide.
Inside, the discovery has brought itself onto the market and it is definitely plushier than its more utilitarian early days 28 years and more than 1.2 million vehicles.
There are four main specifications S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury, and even the entry model heated heat mirror, autonomous emergency braking, lane warding, air conditioning and the latest 8-8- 8-8 and the latest 8 and the latest 8 -8- inch touchscreen incontrol infotainment system.
The upgrade to SE adds leather cushions, LED headlights, electrically adjustable and heated front seats and two-zone climatons. While HSE models receive a panoramic roof, a reversal camera, heated rear seats and a 10-inch touchscreen.
You will get a tail maintenance package, a 360-degree camera system, a climate control with four zones and an impressive meridian sound system for the HSE luxury of Range-Toping-Luxus.
Of course there is still a commanding driving position at the front and it definitely has a command center.
There is also a lot of space and it is just a case to turn one of the outer seats to get access to the third row.
The discovery stretches the areas in the cabin and takes up the luggage with 1,137 liters of space behind the second row and up to 2,406 liters when all the rear seats are folded.
I am almost six feet and managed to sit in the third row. For longer trips, however, the second row may have to be pressed slightly forward. Impressive, especially when you consider that seats are six and seven for small people in many competitors (the Volvo XC90 and Audi Q7 only two).
When you speak of sitting, you can even control them with your smartphone and configure them.
There are three motors available for the first time a four-cylinder diesel, the popular 254-hp V6 diesel and a 3.0-liter V6 petrol of 340 hp.
I tried both diesel products and although the V6 is smooth and powerful-and wonderful-the new 237 hp version of Twin-Turbo of the 2.0-liter diesel unit Ingenium is a revelation.
Refined more sophisticated than in any other Jaguar or Land Rover, it draws well and was more than appropriate off -road. If towing is not its priority, it makes absolutely useful. It is also an economic-es up to 43.5 MPG with CO2 emissions of 171 g/km, during the 3.0-liter value only 39.2 MPG with CO2 emissions of 189 g/km managed.
Both diesel engines are also surprisingly quick from the brand 7.7 seconds in 3.0-liter and 8.0 seconds in the four-cylinder.
Of course, the charged V6 petrol petrol is smooth and full of beans (0-60 km/h in just 6.9 seconds), although the fuel consumption shoots up to 254 g/km to 26 MPG CO2 emissions.
All engines are paired with the excellent eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.
The discovery drives better than ever. Depending on which model you choose, it definitely feels more agile while the journey is seriously smooth. However, it is large and clearly set up for comfort, as it is a lot of body slim when you push it into the corners on more challenging streets. You will soon get used to it, just like a Range Rover, while cruises are a complete joy.
But here is the thing. The 2.0 liter seems to be more planted and it is definitely the combination for which I would choose.
In order to fully appreciate the discovery, it is worth trying their ability to do all-terrain ability in one of Land Rover’s adventure centers. With a maximum ground clearance of 283 mm and 500 mm wheel articulation, it planted very easily, round and by obstacles in the most amazing angles, while the water challenges are a doddle thanks to its 900mm wading capacity.
It has all types of terrain elements that are effortlessly dependent on the challenges and progress.
A different technical development deserves a mention. If you carry regularly, you may be tempted by the cleverly advanced towing jam, so that the drivers can use the controller in the console between the front seats.
The new Land Rover discovery is undoubtedly one of the most capable cars in the world. It looks modern, it is the highest off -road, a comfortable cruiser on the street and it is safe and luxurious. Quite simply, a legend born.
